Giving space for creativity

As an artist showing up to do the creative thing on a consistent basis, I have found that there is a need to take time to go away and recharge my creative battery. I know when ideas or inspiration are lacking that it’s time to break up my routine. That is when I decide it’s time to go to the all powerful list. OK, you got me. I really don’t have a list written down, but I put one together just to share with you.
Here is my list of things to do to recharge :

  1. Get out of the studio and see other art
  2. Take a nap
  3. Re-examine your intentions and vision for your work.
  4. Drink some coffee
  5. Meditate
  6. Exercise
  7. Call a friend
  8. Go for a walk
  9. Did I say take a nap?
  10. Read something inspiring
  11. Go to the park and look at nature
  12. Go see a movie
  13. Take an art workshop – I know just the one to take.
  14. Drink more coffee
  15. Call your supportive spouse or partner
  16. Call my dad (that ones for you dad)

Sometimes I need to employ several items if I am really flat. You have to be honest with yourself as to when it’s recharging or when it has become work avoidance. Only you can say. When you have a show or commission deadline, it becomes more difficult to take those breaks. What I have found is by taking smart breaks, work flows more easily, and I get more done.

3 Actions that will have you sustain your creative practice.

Without commitment, I am easily distracted by the mundane things in life. When you and I look, mostly what takes up our lives is mundane things. Some examples being, doing household chores, taking the dog for a walk or washing the car. These things are all part of living, and have their place. It’s just that if we want to take on a creative endeavor, like writing a book or creating that series of paintings we’ve been thinking about for two years, we need to make a commitment. By making a commitment, we make creating our art the priority. This then alters the course of our future. There is now a new vitality. There is the excitement of a new adventure, and part of the excitement is risk. We have a vision of something grand, with the backdrop of possibly failing.

Over the years, I have made commitments, and have succeeded and failed. Though no matter what the result was, by being committed I ended up taking action where I would not have. Some of what has been created is new work, new discoveries, painting sales and growth as an artist.

Every creative commitment I have taken on and kept in existence over a period of time had at least the first two, and usually all three of the following actionable items.

1. Make it public what you are going to do. Tell someone or someones. e.g. I will create 10 new works by a certain date, or I will set up a website to show and sell my art, etc. (Note – Its recommended to do this with people that care about you, and you trust will empower you, not someone who will tell you all the reasons why you can’t and shouldn’t bother. Use your intuition here.)

2. Create a plan and schedule it on your calendar e.g. From 10-1 paint in my studio. From 1-2 go visit the salvage yard and look for new materials to use for my new mixed media series. Monday, put a coat of primer on the canvas, etc. ( Notice I didn’t say, schedule to paint the Mona Lisa and finish it by Wednesday. Break it down and put down actionable steps towards the result you’re after.)

3. Create a support structure e.g. You could hire a business/art coach that consults with you on a weekly or monthly basis. You could join an empowering artists group. I have done this with an organization called A.C.N. Artist Conference Network. We meet approximately every two weeks to show creative work, and there are weekly calls between the members. If you got moxie, find an artist who inspires you, and ask if they will mentor you (expect to probably pay something.) Be creative, and seek out the best empowering support structure you can find or afford to pay for.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

Letting Go

My brother has been going thru and organizing family keepsakes. Recently he let me know he found a short story I had written when I was around 9 yrs. old. (Very short, under 3 minutes to read-see below) The title of the story is “Books and Feet”. When I read the story, I laughed and thought it showed some creativity. The thought that came to mind was something Picasso said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up

Looking back, I now see that as a young boy I was free to create things. I wasn’t worried about what others thought of my creations. I believe that changed once I had received some atta boys. Don’t get me wrong, having support as a beginning or even an experienced artist is very nurturing and empowering to your creative side. That being said, the old adage, success becomes a trap, comes in to play. If not paying attention, your work can become about something other than the work. Maybe it’s about getting more approval, or making another sale. I’m not saying I think there is anything wrong with these motivations. It’s just useful to be aware of what is driving you. When we are conscious of this, we can choose another context from which to create our work. A context full of possibility and wonder.

From experience my best work happens when my thoughts have subsided, and I’m creating work for no reason. Joy and inspiration can show up when letting go of the work having to turn out a certain way.
